Preparing Your Child for a Healthy School Year

As summer winds down and families begin preparing for a new school year, it’s a good time to remember that a healthy school year starts with more than the right supplies. Here are a few simple steps you can take now to help your child feel their best, both in and out of the classroom.

Schedule a Well-Child Visit

A yearly check-up is more than just a routine appointment. These annual visits are a key part of tracking your child’s growth, development, and overall health. Well-child visits also give you the opportunity to:

  • Update immunizations required for school
  • Address any concerns about sleep, nutrition, or behavior
  • Discuss age-appropriate mental health and emotional well-being
  • Check vision and hearing

If your child plays sports, this is also a great time to complete their physical exam forms.

Stay Up to Date on Vaccinations

Vaccines are one of the best tools we have to keep kids healthy and prevent the spread of illness in schools and communities. Your child’s provider can help ensure they are on schedule for all required immunizations, including Tdap, MMR, and meningitis boosters for older students.

Support Healthy Routines at Home

Back-to-school season is a big transition. Simple routines at home can ease the shift and support your child’s success:

  • Sleep: Aim for consistent bedtimes and enough rest based on age.
  • Nutrition: Start the day with a balanced breakfast and encourage fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in meals and snacks.
  • Activity: Daily movement helps with focus, mood, and physical health.

Consider Mental and Emotional Wellness

New classrooms, social pressures, or academic expectations can sometimes bring stress or anxiety. Encourage open conversations about how your child is feeling and let them know it’s okay to ask for help. If you notice changes in mood, behavior, or sleep, talk to your child’s provider.

Build Good Hygiene Habits

Remind your child about basic hygiene practices to help prevent the spread of germs at school—and to to ensure that illness doesn’t hitch a ride back to your home!

  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow
  • Avoid sharing food, drinks, or personal items
