Back in the Game: Why Sports Physicals Matter for Student Athletes

As summer comes to a close and back-to-school preparations begin, many Maine families are also gearing up for fall sports. Whether it’s soccer, football, cross-country, or field hockey, one of the most important steps for student athletes is getting a sports physical before the season starts.

At DFD Russell Medical Centers, we’re here to make sure your child is healthy, prepared, and ready to safely return to the game.

What Is a Sports Physical?

A sports physical, also known as a pre-participation physical exam (PPE), is a checkup focused on determining whether it’s safe for a child or teen to take part in athletic activities. This exam is different from a regular physical. It zeroes in on your child’s fitness level, past injuries, and any conditions that could impact their ability to play safely.

During the visit, a provider will review your child’s medical history, ask about previous injuries or symptoms, and perform a physical exam that includes checking the heart, lungs, joints, and overall strength and flexibility.

Why Are Sports Physicals Important?

Sports physicals do more than meet school or league requirements. They help prevent injuries and detect underlying health issues early — such as asthma, heart concerns, or joint instability — that could be made worse by physical activity.

They also give providers the chance to talk with students about safe training habits, nutrition, hydration, and how to listen to their bodies when something doesn’t feel right. It’s a great opportunity for your child to ask questions and better understand how to care for their own health.

When Should You Schedule a Sports Physical?

Most schools and athletic programs require a new sports physical each year, often before practices begin in late summer or early fall. August is the ideal time to schedule your child’s exam, ensuring they’re cleared and ready to participate without any last-minute stress.

Booking early also gives you time to complete any required forms and follow up on additional tests or referrals if needed.

What to Bring to a Sports Physical

To make your visit easier and more efficient, bring any forms required by your school or league, a list of current medications, and information about past illnesses or injuries. If your child wears glasses or contacts, bring those as well.

If you’re not sure what’s needed, our team at DFD is happy to help guide you through the process.
